What age is considered to be middle aged? What age is considered elderly?
When does a person turn "Middle Aged" and when do they turn "Elderly"? I heard a T.V. news caster call a 58 year old woman elderly. So now I am wondering. I’m 63 and I don’t feel Middle aged or elderly! Until I look in the mirror, I still feel like I’m 30!

There is a difference between what other people regard as "middle-aged" and what you [and me] as an individual think is middle aged. I’m 60 going on 24! Objectively, middle-age must be around 50 – how many 100 year olds do you know?
40 and 60, I think. Of course, it’s totally arbitrary, so who cares? Live life to the fullest.
You are how you feel and act
A 58 year old person is not a elderly person. I believe that maybe 40 year old through 65 years old would be considered middle age. Anything over that would be elderly. I actually believe that you are as old as you feel. If you feel 30 at 63: You are very blessed! I am 53 and I feel sometimes 63. But most of the time I feel 30. But listen I am not a elderly person. I am not what I once was, but I am not elderly. I’m only better!
I agree with Kobe.
Age is in your mind. You can be an old fuddy duddy at 20 and a spry young thing at 60. It is all about your outlook on life.
I have a friend who is 63 and I am 39. He is really funny and we have a great time together. He acts like he is about 15 sometimes. He seems ageless and he always says that I remind him of a kid. I prefer his company to that of people my own age.
35 middle age and 65 elderly
That was probably a young news caster
Where you are on the spectrum greatly influences your thinking, but the range has definitely shifted upward. Middle age is now from about 40 to 65, and beyond 65 could be called elderly. But it so greatly depends on the individual. There are some people who are elderly in their 50s, others who are stll young in their 70s, so I just refuse to accept labels.
PS: It’s how old you are inside that matters, not how old the exterior shell happens to be…..
I agree with the person who said that the newscaster was probably young. I’m thinking the person was in his/her 20s. It’s ridiculous to think that 58 is elderly!! I’d say that elderly is anything over 75. I’m fast approaching 40, so take these to be the words of someone in your general age bracket – namely, from someone who is ALSO middle aged!
I dunno…. they seem to keep moving as I get older.
middle age 50 elderly 85
I always considered "middle age" to start at 50. An age when you are still active, but not as much as previously. When you still work for a living, but you are beginning to get fond thoughts of retiring, when you hit 65.
And of course "old age" would be anyone who has retired from being a primary bread winner and begins to live off the fruits of all those years of working. Minimum age requirement 65 years, of course, because nowadays you can have people "retiring" at 30 because they’ve made a killing on the stock market!
"Elderly", however, would be those retired persons who now have trouble taking care of themselves, and need some form of assistance to do it–anywhere from 75 to 90 depending on the person involved.
The modern thinking that "old age" begins at 55 disturbs me as much as the one where any woman who is large enough to need to wear a size 10 dress is considered "plus" sized! When I was young, sizes 10 and 12 were considered IDEAL for women. What is this society coming to?
Senior citizens are pensioners’ age: 60 women; 65 men.
Today, children want to continue being childish until they are 30 (and in some cases 40).
God knows when middle age is.
it is irrelevant it depends on the person
It is great, God made human mind in such a flexible way that he/she feels young till the death. Otherwise, lots of deaths might have occurred and the human race might not have increased.
life begins at 40 and elderly is always a minimum of 10 years older than you are
Middle age is when you want to go to bed …..and sleep.lol elderly is when you know you want to go to bed, but can’t remember why
I am 52 yrs but I consider my mom middle age at 84! I hope to be giving the same answer 30 yrs from now!
depends on who’s doing the asking
I’m 62 and feel in my 30’s most of the time. Hate the word "retirement" and hate rocking chairs cause they hurt my spine. When someone start putting people into categories it is just on an average basis-always will be someone who breaks the mold.
And in some cases, shatter it all to hell.
Going to start covering my mirror for the very reason stated in your question.
30–middle aged.50+– elderly.
